A department, not yet a school

Architectural training in Delhi began as the Department of Architecture at Delhi Polytechnic — a modest start, with the profession newly in demand.

1955

Town and Country Planning is founded

The Government of India established the School of Town and Country Planning to provide facilities for rural, urban and regional planning.

1959

Two disciplines, one school

The Department of Architecture, by then affiliated to the University of Delhi, integrated with the School of Town and Country Planning. On integration, the School was renamed the School of Planning and Architecture.

1979

Deemed University status

The Government of India, through the then Ministry of Education and Culture, conferred on SPA the status of “Deemed to be a University,” letting the School broaden its academic and research programmes.

1992

The Alumni Association is registered

Graduates registered the SPA Alumni Association as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 — Certificate of Registration No. S-23095 of 1992, dated 30th June 1992.

2015

Institute of National Importance

SPA was recognised as an Institute of National Importance under an Act of Parliament, cementing its position as a specialised university unlike any other in the country.

Today

1,200+ members, every batch

The Association counts graduates across Architecture, Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Industrial Design and allied disciplines, and continues working to bring every SPA alumnus into its fold.
